May 7, Lalitpur

Today, in association with the Christian Reporters Club, an interactive program on “Christian Engagement in Politics” was organized in the hall of the Covenant Church in Lalitpur, Dholahiti. The program was chaired by the President of the Christian Reporters Club, Manoj Kumar Khadka.

After the opening prayer by Pastor Madhav Paudel, the banner of the Christian Reporters Club was unveiled and Bidur Adhikari, General Secretary of the proposed Republican Party of Nepal, presented a working political paper on the topic of the interaction, addressing the 5 common misconceptions about the state, government and politics, the truth about them, and the future options of Christians in national politics. He argued that the way forward is significant influence in politics. We cannot run away from the presence of politics, as it is ubiquitous. Family, society and state are institutions established by God, so we cannot be separated from them.

The government should impose forced religion, the government should exclude religion from all spheres of life, the government is evil and satanic, do the work of evangelism, not politics, politics, not evangelism – these are wrong concepts, they are incomplete, he said. By their presence and good deeds, Christians should set a positive example and influence in the state and government. In doing so, it should contribute to the promotion of peace and development while maintaining religious freedom for all citizens. Do not engage in intolerant, violent, hateful, angry activities. But one should present a lifestyle that wins everyone’s heart, is serious, intelligent, loving, as well as strong in moral and godly values, the rest of the paper says.

Likewise, Bible teacher and journalist Shukdev Giri said that the reason for the failure of the political game of Christians is the fact that many factions are playing in the same political field, and asked why it is not possible to come together. Soon after, Janata Samajwadi Party’s political committee member Dalmardan Kami insisted that there was a single gender and religious hierarchy, but said that a fully proportional system was necessary.

The leader of the proposed Civil Rights Party, Prem Bahadur Karki, said that even after making all the preparations for the party registration, they postponed the process, believing it is better to unite than to start a new party.

The founder of Rashtriya Mukti Andolan Dallpati Jaywant Bikram Shah, said that he was in favor of unity and proposed that it should be done methodically. He claimed that victory can be achieved by active participation of Christians at all levels and bodies.

Similarly, the president of Nepal Christian Society, Omprakash Subba, said that if the parties raise their voices in favor of the Christian community, they will not only ask for votes during the election, but all kinds of support will be provided.

Journalist Niroj Tolange said that the representatives of some organizations have disappeared, while expressing their dissatisfaction that the Christian community has dispersed, did not participate and did not cooperate with the Christian journalists and media persons, he said that they will no longer remain silent about the problems within the community. Similarly, journalist Biswas Thapa claimed that new leadership is necessary because the old leadership has been tested and failed.

President of Janajagaran Party Nepal Dr. BP Khanal said that he has always been in favor of unity, he has been flexible many times and handed over the party to others, but too much flexibility in politics is also harmful, and expressed his displeasure over the opening of new parties and their promotion.

Journalist Kumarsin Bisht gave point-by-point advice and opined that there should be unity between the parties, proper use of social networks, expansion of organizations in villages, and political awareness programs in the community.

The founder president of The Evangelical Christian Alliance of Nepal (ECAN) Dr. Simon Peter gave an example of Jesus’ ministry from Luke 4, saying that politics and the media are also a calling, a work of service. He also wished the Christian Reports Club Nepal and said that he will continue to support the club.

In the end, the chairman of the program thanked all the speakers and attendees and said that such programs will be organized regularly from now on.

In this way, in the presence of various parties, organizations, service workers, and media workers, the program, which was efficiently conducted by Pramod Khadka, editor of Jai Masihi.com, was of the opinion of the participants that it was very thought-provoking and important.

Some excerpts from the working paper:

Going further, in terms of policy, politics, state and government, some of the serious issues that any party leader, or even an ordinary voter, must face and be clear about are:

Protection of life (when life begins, its sanctity), marriage and family (marriage only between a woman and a man, same-sex marriage is morally wrong and biologically non-reproductive).

Economy (individual ownership over natural resources and property), environment (conservation and use of nature is for humans, only for nature, not for worship)

National Security and Borders (Nation and Borders). It is not just the opinion or desire of a person, the life span and limits are determined by God, every nation, ethnic group should be able to work independently, the concept of a global government, a government is a new form of the tower of Babel). Foreign policy (the above goes together: every small and large nation is sovereign).

Freedom of expression (generally unrestricted, may be limited in special circumstances) Freedom of religion.

Special groups, the media, and bias (generally the unbiased presentation of the truth) can delve into serious issues and create public opinion in favor of the right issue. Now, especially against the traditional moral values, against the family and religion, in favor of immorality and arbitrariness, the media is vigorously promoting, that is wrong. As a watchdog, the watchdog is the responsibility of the media world.

Regarding polarization and integration:

Now, instead of running many shops, it is appropriate to polarize the parties with the same edge and ideas to serve the entire community, politics, and even for the sake of the people and the nation.

In this sense, the country now has traditional parties, left-wing parties, centrist parties, regionalist parties and democratic parties.

If we can move forward from among the Christian faith community on the democratic side, protecting identity and inclusiveness, including other marginalized parties, we can definitely become a decisive and leading party.

Meetings and discussions are also going on for this. I also believe that this interaction program will be an important step in that direction. (from the paper)
