Equity & ethics in data journalism: Hands-on approaches to getting your data right (June 22 – July 19, 2020)

As one interested in getting the facts right first- interpretation of facts can differ to some extent, but if an objective approach is followed, such differences amount to surmountable ones, I joined the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on  “Journalism in a pandemic: Covering COVID-19 now and in the future”, offered by the Knight Center for journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin. After the course completion, they also provided a non-accredited certificate.

They have offered another free course on “Equity & ethics in data journalism: Hands-on approaches to getting your data right”. So, if you are interested, you can refer to the info below:

“Hello and welcome to the course “Equity & ethics in data journalism: hands-on approaches to getting your data right.” We’re glad you’re here.

Very few people build data stories because they want to promote racist or sexist ideas. However, it’s very easy to accidentally fall into these traps, particularly when there’s so much talk about the objectivity of evidence. It’s really easy to make mistakes when using data. A working understanding of how to incorporate ethics and equity into data stories is essential for anyone researching, writing, or reading data journalism This course will guide learners hands-on through the process of learning to identify inequity and hidden bias at seven key stages of the data journalism lifecycle.

This course is open to anyone who is interested in data journalism, you are not expected to have high level technical or statistical skills. Anyone who is curious and willing to experiment will be able to learn successfully in this course.

You can get started by checking out this video called “Not your Average Average” It will give you a good sense of the type of ideas we’ll be working with.

You can also check out the syllabus for the course. It gives you a sense of the course’s goals, what we’ll discuss each week. You can find it here.

Also feel free to jump on in by reading and listening to these resources to get you started thinking about the issues of equity and ethics in data stories.”
