March 01, Kathmandu-

A self-proclaimed god-man of India Jaggi Vasudev has launched a fecebook ad about his meditation and fellwoship on March 8, in Kathmandu. This ad drew my attention as I checked the innocuous gathering is ultimately aimed at raising money.

“In celebrating the Divine Feminine, you will know the True Beauty of life.” So reads the webiste.

But there are seat arrangements, from free of charge to Rs. 22,000!

Narayani- General Seating- is Free, whereas Gandaki- Premium Seating- costs Rs. 22,000.

This just shows the business, materialistic motive behind all the so-called spiritual, mystic movement.

Jagadeesh alias Jaggi Vasudev alias Sadhguru is an icon now to millions of his followers.  His followers range from High Court Judges to none other than the Prime Minister of India.   The clout enjoyed by Jaggi exceeds that of Pathanjali guru Baba Ramdev or Sri Sri Ravishankar.  The reason being, while the other two Gurus are very keen to be seen in the company of corporate leaders, CEOs and movers and shakers of the corporate world, Jaggi is keen to enter into the echelons of power. Viz. IAS, IPS and senior officers, Judges, and middlemen.

Within a short span of time, Jaggi has attained cult status and millions of his well-educated followers worship him as God.

The early days of Jaggi Vasudev are quite murky. He was accused of the murder of his wife Viji.  Viji, was found dead under mysterious circumstances and Jaggi explained it away stating she had attained Moksha.  But Viji’s father Ganganna though otherwise.  In his complaint filed with the Bengaluru city police, Ganganna alleged that Jaggi killed his daughter Viji, due to an affair with another woman. He also alleged that Jaggi has burnt the body of his daughter in spite of a specific request by him to perform the last rites.  An Indian Express report dated 12, October 1997 reads :

“Close on the heels of scandals relating to fake godmen getting exposed, yet another ashram from Coimbatore is in the limelight with Jaggi Vasudev alias Jagadeesh of Isha Yoga ashram at Poondi near Coimbatore, being charged with the murder of his wife Viji alias Vijayakumari. A team of police personnel recently visited the premises of Isha Ashram at Poondi and interrogated the inmates of the ashram. Godman Jaggi is away in the US.According to police, T. S. Ganganna of Bangalore (father of Viji) had preferred a complaint with the Bangalore Police suspecting foul play in the death of his daughter Viji. The complainant had stated that his daughter left him last on June 15, 1996. He reportedly received a message on January 23, 1997, from Jaggi Vasudev, stating that Viji was no more.Ganganna said that Jaggi Vasudev had hurriedly completed the cremation on Jan.24 even before they could rush from Bangalore, raising suspicion about the nature of death. He suspected death due to poisoning or strangulation.According to him, Jaggi Vasudev could have caused the death of Viji to facilitate his illicit relationship with yet another inmate of the ashram. Based on the complaint of Ganganna to the Bangalore City Police on Aug. 12, a case was registered. The Bangalore City Police transferred it to the Coimbatore Rural Police. The Coimbatore Rural Police have registered a case against Jaggi Vasudev under Section 302 of IPC (murder) and IPC 201 (suppression of evidence).Later, Isa Yoga Foundation has denied reports that Jaggi Vasudev had fled to the USA to avoid investigation of the ashram. Authorised Signatory of the ashram, Kiran stated that Guruji had gone for giving lectures.”

The case registered by Bengaluru city police was subsequently transferred to Coimbatore and the Alandurai PS registered a case in Cr. No. 176/1997 u/s 302, 201 IPC r/w 34 of IPC.   However, under mysterious circumstances, the case was closed as undetected on 08.01.1999 in RCS 6/99.

The death of Jaggi’s wife Viji remains a mystery till date.  However, Jaggi continues to give detailed lectures about how Viji attained moksha and merged with God.

Jaggi who was a low profile Guru shot to fame following his series in the popular weekly Ananda Vikatan titled ‘Athanaikum Aasaipadu’, which translates as, ‘desire for everything’. This is directly in contrast with the teachings of Buddha, which says, ‘desire is the root cause of all evil’. This series in Ananda Vikatan catapulted him to fame.  But he was yet to enter the power corridors.

Come 2006,  Jaggi got close to the ruling power due to his association with the Tamil Bi-Weekly Nakkiran’s associate editor Kamaraj.  Following his association with Kamaraj, Jaggi got introduced to the then Chief Minister Karunanidhi and got into the corridors of power.  There was no looking back from there.  Jaggi, who had destroyed the greenery in and around the foothills of Velliangiri Hills, at Coimbatore, started a new ‘greenery movement’ with the then CM Karunanidhi.  The campaign made headlines and Jaggi ensured that he had a dedicated uninterrupted power line to his ashram when the state was suffering from acute power shortage. Due to his influence, he ensured that the forest department’s Toll plaza on the way to his ashram was also removed.

Jaggi’s graph continued to rise and he began to get cosy with many celebrities, thus expanding his clout throughout the country.  However, allegations of bulldozing land owners into selling their lands and undertaking constructions in violation of Hill Area Conservation Authority and Town and Country Planning act came to the forefront.  This writer in 2013, first exposed the illegal constructions in Jaggi’s ashram through a series of articles.    Subsequently, three public interest litigations were filed in the Madras HC seeking a direction for the demolition of illegal constructions.  All the litigations are still pending in the Madras HC. But constructions violating all norms and rules, continue unabated to this day.

Here is a coverage by Patheos:

There’s been some controversial remarks in some websites about the death of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s wife, Vijji. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is the founder of the non-profit Isha Foundation. I have read Sadhguru’s articles and watched his videos, and was generally very impressed by his thoughts and perspectives. His talk at the United Nations, New York on International Yoga Day 2016 was something I found especially interesting, since he offered a plan to make yoga India’s first truly global export in the 21st Century.

The Source of Controversy

So, after coming across these controversial comments about his wife’s death, I decided to investigate whether there was any truth in the matter, or whether it was disgruntled, vested interests blowing off some steam. It is quite well-known that Jaggi Vasudev is no fan of paid religious conversions, and neither has he been very complimentary about the previous Congress government and Sonia Gandhi brigade. So I wanted to investigate whether there was a chance that these elements were seeding false accusations.

After some looking around, I found a refutation of these allegations coming straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth. Here’s Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev talking about his wife’s death at a conversation with Bollywood film actor Anupam Kher. He answers the question of Kiron Kher, Anupam Kher’s wife.

Legal aspects of the death allegations

Before that, a little background about the police FIR and other legal issues around this topic. Vijaykumari’s death took place in January, 1997. About 7 months after the death, the New Indian Express newspaper reported in August that a case had been filed in the Bangalore police station against Sadhguru, accusing him of causing the death of his wife. The case was transferred to the Coimbatore Police. However, 8 months later, a news report notes that the case was closed after investigation by police, who found no wrongdoing and concluded that there was no case for further investigation.

A case of murder or similar accusations being closed as having no evidence either means the case was closed because of “pressure”, or the case was opened because of “pressure.” Which is the case here? It is hard to find any “hard” evidence because of the very nature of such “pressure”. However, the New Indian Express and the Tamil magazine Nakeeran noted that the local DMK MLA – DMK is one of the political parties in Tamil Nadu – had assured that “Jaggi would be put in jail.” (this is translated from Tamil).

That gives a possible clue. Probably the case was opened upon pressure. For the police to close a case in a few months citing no evidence, despite pressure from the local MLA, probably means there wasn’t even a shred to pick up and make a case out of. This is conjecture of course, and I am not accusing all police officers of being stooges, but I think this makes it reasonably clear that there was some pressure for them to forcibly file and make a case out of it.

Now let’s get back to Sadhguru’s answer.

Sadhguru On His Wife’s Death in Mystic’s Musings

Seeker: Vijji left her body before the end of the consecration process, leaving the energy triangle incomplete. How, then, did you continue with it, Sadhguru?

Sadhguru: Because my wife, Vijji, was part of the consecration process, for me in this life, the social situation was more conducive. Everything was going too well, like a dream. When things were going so well, especially with a process like this, I knew some impediment would come. Usually, the difficulty always came from social situations. So I instructed all the people around me to be extremely careful not to get into any kind of trouble anywhere; not to create any kind of resistance with anybody, because I knew something was coming. From which direction it would come, we were watching, and here it came. Vijji just dropped her body, and the consecration was left incomplete. She attained Mahasamadhi, and we were back to square one again. Ninety-five percent of the work was done. Just a little more time, in one more week, we would have completed the consecration, but now we got stuck. It took us another one-and-a-half years to finish the work.

Date of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s Wife’s Death

Seeker: How could Vijji have left her body when the consecration process was so close to completion? Couldn’t she have waited until it was over and then leave?

Sadhguru: Vijji was not an accomplished yogi. She did what she did with just the sheer intensity of her emotions. The last few months for her, every step, every breath, had become just ‘Shambho.’ She set forth towards this process in late July, and on the last three full moon days of December, January and February, she was to raise the pitch of her sadhana. As you know, the last two full moons, she cooked and served all at the ashram by her own hand. The consecration process, as it was going, was sure to be over before the 23rd of January, but due to certain unavoidable social circumstances, that was not to be. What she thought would happen on the coming full moon day in the month of February, happened a month early. That day was a very special day in terms of the way energies were moving for this planet.

There was an exceedingly rare and archetypically appropriate planetary alignment, a moment in time expressed in the heavens as a perfect six-pointed star. This pattern comes on the exact day where three outer planets, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune are conjoined together for the first time in almost two hundred years. On January 23rd, this cluster of planets centered on the first degree of Aquarius, joined by the Sun with the Full Moon opposite them all. This pattern may also be seen as a symbolic representation of the long heralded ‘dawning of the Age of Aquarius.’ It is also the thaipoosam, a day that many sages of the past had chosen for their own Mahasamadhi. Though on one level I knew this was coming, the situation around me and what was demanded out of me at that moment blocked my conscious cognition. Though her leaving was very much of conscious will, she had no moment to moment control over the life forces; but the last few minutes before she left, she was aware, and accommodated the dissolution of herself by removing all the jewelry that was on her body, as the metal would have been a hindrance. When the Divine descends, you just accommodate.

Seeker: Sadhguru, you have told all of us Vijji is no more; she truly is no more. But, at times, when we needed her to form the triangle during the consecration process, I very clearly felt her there, like almost physically present. I want to know how this was possible.

Sadhguru: Even if the flower is no more, still, the fragrance can be. And the fragrance of this flower is forever; it’s never lost. It’s just that it may get mixed up with so many other smells and you may not be sensitive enough to feel it; but, once it enters the air, it’s always there in a certain way. The physical fragrance may die, but the energy fragrance that we’re talking about can’t be killed. Now, Sadhguru Shri Brahma left his body up there on the mountain. That person is no more in the sense that he is in some other form now; but even today, if you go there, that energy is not dead in any way, isn’t it? It is still very much there, and it has kept its quality. Here, the quality or the energy is different. So when it comes to Vijji, she’s truly no more. We know what kind of energy she carried; that fragrance is definitely felt, even today. You can’t exorcise her fragrance, it is impossible, but she can’t come and do anything; there is no ‘she’ anymore.

We can easily create a person on the energy level. If you’re willing, if you sit in front of the Dhyanalinga, you will see that it’s a whole person. It’s not just something vibrating, or some meditative energy, nothing like that. It’s a whole person with all the seven chakras at their peak. I am surprised you asked this question now, because just four or five days ago, you saw me creating a person or the energy of a whole person, just like that. In two minutes, I had a new person going. In that sense, we can create Vijji, we can create Gautama Buddha, we can create anybody. If we know the fragrance of what that person is; the energy body can be created.

If you want to create an actual physical body, that’s also possible, but then you have to get into the five elements and meddle with them, which is a deep binding karmic factor. Once you get into the five elements, then you can’t do something and leave it like that; it entangles with yourself in so many ways. That leads you into a different sphere of life altogether, but even that is not impossible. It’s very much possible. We can re-create that physical body also, but it serves no spiritual purpose. It is only to fulfill your attachments, which is not the right thing to do. You get deeply entangled if you meddle with the five elements. Even the existing five elements in the body, which is your physical body, if you get too involved with them, you get entangled. When you do this kind of work, of meddling with the elements on that level, your entanglement will be very, very deep, which is unnecessary; but on the energy level, you can play this game and get away with it without any entanglement. This can also become a very big bondage if you don’t approach it with the right kind of dispassion. Above all, you need insulation. If you know how to create insulation for yourself, you can play games without the games becoming a part of you. If you don’t create the right kind of insulation, it can become a deeply entangling process.

Here is an exposing video, which dismantles his tall claims.
