‘Worst nightmare’: violence feared after Myanmar military coup

Myanmar’s military took power from an elected government after detaining civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and several other politicians on February 1, 2021.

The coup came after Suu Kyi’s party won landslide victory in a November 8 election, which the military claimed to be fraudulent.
