December 5-

The merciless of killing of Nabaraj Bika, 21, and five of his friends who were stalked and chased into the Bheri river  as he prepared to elope with a 17-year-old girl from a higher-caste family, has finally been avenged with justice by sentencing 23 persons for life imprisonment.

The girl friend and her mother and brother are sentenced for 2 years, with 50 thousand penalty; while 8 others have been given clean cheat.

A single bench of District judge Khadka Bahadur KC has reached this verdict after three and half years of the incident that occurred in May 23, 2020.

Among the guilty are then Ward Chair of Chaurhajari Municipality Dambar B. Malla, Dilli Malla Thakuri, Prem B Thakuri etc.

The heinous crime was executed in Soti village of the Ward 8 of the municipality, where Nabaraj BK and his five friends were chased and killed. Nabaraj’s friends who were brutally murdered included Takaram Sunar, Lokendra Sunar, Sandeep BK, Ganesh Budha and Govinda Shahi.

Some of them were caught alive and were thrown into the  Bheri river after tying their hands and legs so they would drown.

The reason behind all this is the evil concept of untouchability, deeply ingrained in the Hindu so-called higher castes, which givers birth to caste discrimination. Four of the the murdered young men were Dalits.

Besides the monstrosity of the immediate incident, the process that followed has been nothing short of inhuman. The then home minister Janardan Sharma was quick to absolve his influential, high-caste voters, as he claimed in Parliament that the Dalits had not been killed as such, that they had instead fallen into the river while being chased, and that it was not a case of caste discrimination.

A parliamentary probe blasted Sharma’s claim, as it established that the deaths were a premeditated mass murder influenced by caste discrimination. Sharma, though, has been persistent in his attempts to shield his voter base at the cost of dehumanising the victims and their families. What’s more, 11 of the 34 accused in the case, including the mother of Nabaraj BK’s purported girlfriend who was known as the main conspirator in the killings, have been let out of the bars.

The reason behind all this is the evil concept of untouchability, deeply ingrained in the Hindu so-called higher castes, which givers birth to caste discrimination. Four of the the murdered young men were Dalits.

With the verdict, there has been a sigh of relief on the social media that justice finally been dispensed, although belatedly. Senior Advocate and esteemed human rights activist Dinesh Tripathi who has been fighting the case on behalf of the murdered young me, has expressed thus:

“Congratulations to us all- this is the day justice triumphed. Rukum District Court has judged 23 persons guilty of murdering 6 young men including Nabaraj BK. I was also there to argue the case for them.”
