Netizens and some members of the LGBTQIA community in Cebu opposed the alleged mistreatment of a transgender TV and events host toward a restaurant server in the city Sunday.

Jude Bacalso, an events host and former morning show host of ABS-CBN Cebu, allegedly berated one of the staff for misgendering and calling him “sir” instead of his preferred honorific, according to a now-viral post by a certain John Calderon.

The post by Calderon indicated Bacalso made the unnamed server him stand for two hours and berated the restaurant staffer.

The other restaurant staff and some onlookers were also clueless and found it difficult to console their colleague, the post said.

“The other employees sa Ulli’s already tried to console in behalf sa server but this guy Jude won’t leave the server because of the sole reason that the server misgendered the guy Jude Bacalso,” the post by Calderon read.

In his defense, Bacalso denied screaming at the staff member, but said the confrontation happened due to a “series of errors.”

Jude Bacalso, who demanded his preferred honorific

Bacalso said he has no qualms being called “sir” as his relatives and students do so, according to a now-deleted statement posted on his Facebook timeline.

However, Bacalso admitted the waiter stood for hours and said they needed gender sensitivity training.

“Did the staff stand there for hours? Yes, we were waiting to resolve it with the owners. Did I demand that he stand there as punishment? No. The supervisor was there when I discussed with the erring staff that perhaps a gender sensitivity seminar would benefit them. The supervisor acknowledged that this incident was a wake-up call to them and that they would welcome that opportunity.”

Netizens were quick to react to the incident, saying it is a disgrace to the LGBTQIA community.

Cebuano-speaking netizens commenting on Calderon’s post have called the embattled host entitled and called him out, even to the point of posting allegedly unpleasant encounters with the events host.
