Outcomes and Learnings?

ILGA Asia facebook post reads:

“Day 4: 10th ILGA Asia Conference

From challenging anti-trans movements to pushing for marriage equality, this year’s ILGA Asia Conference was a powerful space for learning, collaboration, and activism. The discussions on LGBTIQ rights under CEDAW, economic inclusion, legal advocacy, and corporate engagement highlighted the many strategies shaping the future of LGBTIQ rights in the region. Sessions on feminist resourcing, arts as a tool for advocacy, and queer community-building reminded us that resistance and creativity are both essential, nondispensable components of a movement.
The East Asian Caucus, governance discussions, and networking spaces strengthened regional solidarity, while the Cultural Night and receptions were celebrations of our shared joy, rage, and resilience. The fight for equality in Asia continues as our discussions become more interwoven throughout the conference, and conclude finally for day 5!”
Criticism from within: Activists from Bangladesh clash out in public; LGBT Pioneer in Nepal’s thinly veiled condemnation!

One named MD Muntasair Rahman wrote in an irate tone,

“Hochimin openly supported the fascist Awami League in social media during the tragic events of July at Bangladesh, where state-sponsored violence led to the loss of countless innocent lives. Despite promoting the party’s ideology and benefiting from governmental privileges in the past, such support during a time of bloodshed is both alarming and unacceptable. Hochimin mocked the suffering of those who resisted state violence, sharing disparaging posts and photos of current advisors of interim government Asif Mahmud and Nahid Islam—key student leaders who were held at the DB office and photographed dining with DB officer Harun. The general public, as well as the community, is well aware of Hochimin’s stance. Hochimin is now widely recognized as a supporter of the Awami fascist regime, a label that reflects both her public alignment and her loss of credibility as someone advocating for the rights and safety of the community. These behaviors and alignments make it clear that Hochimin can no longer be regarded as a safe or trustworthy representation for the community. https://web.facebook.com/…/pfbid0NgipFvgtRfonabnkG96zNp…”

Hochemin Islam in turn responded with equal barb!

“MD Muntasir Rahman I won’t stoop to your level. But honestly, Oh please, Muntasir, can you take this to BBC or CNN? Maybe then you won’t have to copy-paste the same thing for six months. I actually feel sorry for you—so much effort, yet losing credibility every single day.

I kept quiet because I understand frustration within our community. But let’s be real—will your so-called allies in this wonderful interim government ever truly accept you? Or are you just another pawn they’ll discard when convenient? And let’s not forget—you are a failed gay porn star on Twitter. The whole community knows about it, just like the world knows what’s happening in Bangladesh. No one needs to explain anything. Have you seen where the BDT currency has fallen today? Open your eyes! The world already knows everything about this nation.
Despite our differences, I still believe that we, as a community, should stand together. But I can see your insecurities—your discomfort with a trans woman who has sacrificed everything, standing up for justice. If anything happens to me, know that your reckless, divisive words will be part of the reason.
I’m honestly surprised—how can you take a stand with fundamentalists and militants? And you’re trying to erase a transgender activist? Someone who has worked tirelessly for her community? Listen, my only interest is my community—beyond everything, even beyond politics.”

Sunil Babu Panta, Asia’s first openly gay MP from Nepal in the second Constituent Assembly, has expressed his disappointment veiled as a genuine concern at the lavishness of the conference. He wrote this on his Facebook wall:

“The ongoing ILGA Asia conference in Kathmandu, with its 600+ international attendees and venue at the luxurious Soaltee Kathmandu, has sparked debate regarding the prioritization of resources. In a climate of funding scarcity, due to President Trump’s sudden funding cuts, questions arise about whether such a lavish event represents the most effective use of donor support. Could those funds have been better directed towards bolstering the essential services provided by grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations across Asia?

The potential impact of funding 200 smaller, community-based groups versus a single large conference warrants careful consideration. Activists, donors, and organizers alike must be mindful of maximizing value for money and ensuring that resources reach those most in need. While international gatherings play a role in visibility and networking, it’s crucial to balance these benefits against the immediate, tangible needs of vulnerable communities. A deeper discussion is needed on how to ensure that conferences, and funding in general, are structured to serve the broader LGBTQ+ movement in the most equitable and impactful way.
But it’s interesting to see The Kathmandu Post covering only onesided story, not questioning to justify such a lavish conference by the I/NGO.”
A Nation in Slumber
The scribe had the opportunity of meeting a veteran intellectual, former National Human Rights Commissioner, Dean and Principal of Nepal Engineering College Dr. KB Rokaya even as the ILGA Asia Conference commenced on February 24.
It’s shocking and deeply concerning that such a conference which promotes potentially destructive agenda is being held and no one seems to be aware of this; no meaningful voice is raised, Dr Rokaya expressed his dismay.

There were practically no publicly visible voice raising concern or opposition to the LGBT and Trans activism here in Nepal; but it all changed with the first ever public live broadcast interaction program organized by Media Advocacy Forum-Nepal on April 5, 2025 at the Reporters Club Nepal.

This program kick started numerous other media interaction, closed seminars and public demonstrations by faith communities, political parties and fronts, and media forums and campaigns which involved Members of Parliaments, advocates and media persons in various ways.
